Shields war

Above: Crow shield preserved in Berlin

The shield of war was not so much physical protection to its holder as a security for his spirit. the warrior who wanted to build one chose a hide that had to be large at least twice the shield to be built. With the assistance of friends dug a circular hole in the ground which lit a fire and stared down through the pegs, the skin over the opening of the excavation. It is then rubbed with animal glue and the same for the effect of heat, it began to shrink. With the help of the good comrades moved hand in hand, placing the pegs adequately to the new width assumed. Each time you move the pegs back the skin was soaked with animal glue. These operations were repeated until the skin did not reach the desired size. At that point, he removed the pins, it is trimmed to remove the holes left thereof, and any imperfections and we began the process of decoration. The leather treated in this way became tough enough to withstand the blows of arrows, remaining at the same time, light enough to carry in battle.
This technique is described meticulously by the artist and explorer Catlin in his "Letters."

"Beaver Tails"

Above: knife sheath for a "beaver tail" Blackfeet-1880

During the early periods of trade between Europeans and the peoples of the North East coast, where stood the new sustainable settlements (New York and Manhattan, for example), most items were swapped for those intended for everyday use. Needles and thread to sew clothes, hunting knives, and blankets for shelter from the rigors of time. Virtually every Indian

carried with him at least to use a knife to eat, clean the skin or hunting. With the intensification of trade knives became more than one and became more sophisticated forms.

One in particular was called a "beaver tail" and was widely disseminated among the peoples of the Northern Plains. Knives were often made in England (and Scotland in particular) with a blade form a "dagger" and ornate handles.

Among the Blackfeet (or Blackfoot) diffusse you use sliders to make specific to these particular knives, sheaths with an unusual shape, I derived those traditionally made by the people with bark. These sheaths were called in English "Dagger sheaths. The net effect of this tradition was that of artifacts hours ornate wrought antiques at auctions at very high prices.

"Good Medicine"

bag of medicine Mi'kmaq
derived from the paw of a bear

The custom to build and carry a small bag or backpack where to keep personal amulets had spread throughout North America. These objects were made in many different skins (skins of otter, deer or bird) and the choice of type was determined by the "vision" that its author had. If, in his mystical experience of the warrior had seen a magpie then that was the skin that had to use for his medicine bag. The content, however, was the most diverse. It was always objects or plants that had a prominent place in the vision he had and that it was believed would protect the wearer wearing.

There are museums, some of these bags of medicine with their content but are still quite rare to find items on the antiques market.

The reason is quite simple: faith in the power of the object was that its owner would not have ever voluntarily discarded. Suffice it to say that, in Plains, a warrior who had lost her bag (for example, in battle) could not possibly make another. The only way to be still protected by a "good medicine" was to steal the amulet in a shipment of an enemy warrior.

Even when missionaries completed their work of evangelizing the Indians converted, while agreeing not to bring more than just wearing the bag, categorically refused to give it or sell it to anyone and always chose instead to bury him in a place known only to them.

in trade trade among the tribes that lived in the area of the Great Plains and tribes that inhabited the North Western area of the United States considered as one of the most valuable assets was the shell of Dentalium. The Dentalium is a mollusk that lives in the coastal waters of the Pacific Ocean. Because of its shape, which was likely to be used as a decorative element to create adornments or clothing, this sort of mollusc was being tightened trade since prehistoric times, trade in which the inhabitants of the Plains were willing to "pay "high prices for a few of these shells. Many of the inhabitants of the Plains had never gone through the chain of the Rocky Mountains and never seen the sea. Speaking then of the area of origin of these ornaments were limited to saying that they were "beyond the mountains." The value of barter than a handful of the top 800 dental was set at a good horse and again around 1880 a merchant, who had bought a dress entirely covered by these Indian women cochiglie, derived from the sale of half of them ( that had failed to unpick from the garment) the astronomical sum of $ 4,000 for the period.

Men After Shaving Skin Color Green

' art

quiver and scabbard arc Nez Perce
richly decorated with traditional geometric patterns

In their now classic study on the beads decorations entitled "Crow Indian beadwork" the authors, W. Wildschut and JC Ewers, noted the frequent reports of cultural exchange occurred between the Crow Nation (Apsaaloke or better in their language) and the peoples who inhabited the areas of the Plateau, in the northeast U.S.. These exchanges were first of all commercial products harvested or cultivated on the coast would travel thousands of miles to reach the Plains where they were exchanged with the skins of bison, horses etc. All of this path is then translated into a reciprocal influence on the patterns and colors that were reported craft products. A common feature was the use of a wide palette of colors from light that was very clear (often used as background) to switch to green and transparent to dark blue, yellow and so on. Another element common to the two peoples was to recreate, with the use of bead embroidery, designs, and the elements that made up the decorations painted on the ancient "Parfleche (rawhide containers) that I had already said. And so a series of triangles, and often the one inside the other, where the bands of color proceeded in diagonal stripes were going to make the rich products of these artisans.

One of my medicine bag in the style of the Plateau. The original from which I took cue is made by renowned artist Angela Swedberg. Some of his works on the subject is visible to this address: http://angelaswedberg.blogspot.com/2009/05/good-medicine.html

Leather Jackets

Jacket Athabaskan

L 'used to decorate beads, or other techniques, extended over time to even those of their white clothes. Especially in the Northern Territory where the climate required the use of barbed heavier garments, spread the use of jackets (or coats), cut on the uniforms of the British or French armies committed there. The raw material used was, however, the skin of deer or other animals, to tanned Indian fashion. From this encounter between two cultures as different styles of clothing came into being of particular beauty.
