Grandmother Turtle

Above: amulet for the umbilical cord Sioux

Among First Nations, the turtle was considered a symbol of strength, endurance and fertility. Such was the relief it recognized that its symbol was the sign language used to communicate between different tribes. In the Great Plains the sign of the turtle was a wish for long life. But the turtle was the symbol of truth and know the truth meant to understand and remain faithful to the fundamental laws of the Creator. It was also the belief that "Grandma Turtle," the ancestor of all ancestral turtles, was present when the Creator gave man the seven sacred laws. "Grandmother Turtle" was there to ensure that the sacred laws were not forgotten. The plates on the back of the turtle is 13. They showed the 13 moons that make up a single revolution of the earth around the sun, witnessing the truth the dictates of the Creator and its laws. On the back there are 28 signs. They represented the female body and its rhythms related to the lunar cycle. The entire shell of the animal served to remind people the plans of the Creator and their realization in practice.
For every new birth in the Plains, it was common to make the amulets in the form of a totemic animal for the child. Given the significance that the turtle was recognized many of these amulets were shaped like animals. They were decorated with beads, quills etc porscopino. and hung the cradle of the child. Dell'amuleto was kept inside the dried umbilical cord of the newcomer.
